Tours from Koh Lanta
The island days that leave from Koh Lanta, not from Ao Nang: four islands to the south, and Koh Rok in the season.

Shallow water at Klong Dao, long quiet evenings and days at sea that leave from the island. Which beach for which age, which trips take small children, and what is far away.
Koh Lanta suits a family that wants to stay in one place: one beach, one hotel, days in the shallows and early evenings. It is a long way from Ao Nang's island tours, but it has its own days at sea, and the west coast offers calm, shallow water for the smallest children.
This page reads the island for a family: getting there with children, the beach for each age, the days at sea and the ages they take, what to do ashore, health care on an island, and the monsoon.
Come between November and April, sleep at Klong Dao if your children are small, and plan on staying put: Lanta is an island for long beach days, not for a tour every morning. Keep one day at sea, chosen for your youngest child's age, and one afternoon ashore in the old town. Leave the cave, the far south's roads and the monsoon months for another trip.
This page covers what is particular to Lanta. For life jackets, the sun, mosquitoes and the rest that applies everywhere around Krabi, see our article on Krabi with kids.
Krabi with kids: life jackets, sun and health
All year, the way in is the road: a van or a car to Hua Hin pier on the mainland, a car ferry across to Lanta Noi, then the bridge to Lanta Yai. Travel guides put it at about 2 to 2.5 hours from Krabi Airport and about three hours from Ao Nang. The ferry has no fixed timetable, and one guide reports waits that add hours in December and January: pack snacks and water as if the journey were longer.
From November to April, boats also run from Klong Jilad, near Krabi Town, and from Ao Nang to Saladan, in the north of the island. Klong Dao is the first beach south of Saladan. Ask your hotel for a pickup from the pier or the van when you book: there is no public transport on the island.
Koh Lanta from Krabi: the road, the ferry and the boats
Lanta's beaches all face west along one road, and the choice of beach is the choice of hotel. Our article on Lanta's beaches goes down the coast in order; here is the same coast read for children.
Whatever the beach, the tide changes it during the day: look at a tide table before a beach morning, and ask the hotel what its stretch is like at low water. Klong Dao's shallows suit a two-year-old and frustrate a ten-year-old who wants to swim, since you wade a long way out first.

| Children who swim | Long Beach for a good swim, avoiding its rocky southern stretch; or the north end of Klong Nin, the better swim by one guide's account |
| Older children with a mask | Kantiang Bay: calm, with coral you can snorkel from the shore at its southern end; swimming is best at high tide |
| Not for small children | Klong Khong: a rocky reef along the waterline makes low tide awkward |

Four of the days out we list leave from Lanta itself, with pickup. They are all long, and their booking pages set different rules for young children. The child rate on each runs from 4 to 11.
Being allowed on board is not the same as enjoying the day. For a first day at sea with a young child, the longtail day is the gentler choice: the boat is slower and stays low on the water. Koh Rok and Koh Haa are a long run offshore by speedboat, better for children who already snorkel and do not get seasick.
Check the calendar before you promise anything. Koh Rok is closed from 1 June to 30 September, and in 2026 Koh Haa and Koh Ngai were reported closed from 11 June because of Portuguese man o' war, with no reopening announced when we checked. Since April 2025, a life jacket is compulsory for snorkelling near the reefs: ask the operator whether they carry your children's sizes.
| Four islands and the Emerald Cave | By longtail, about 7 hours; children 3 and under join free but must be on the booking |
|---|---|
| Four islands to Koh Kradan | About 8 hours, boat type not stated; children 3 and under are booked in a separate category |
| Koh Rok and Koh Haa | By speedboat, 7.5 to 8.5 hours; children 3 and under are not permitted |
| Mangrove kayaking and Koh Talabeng | About 7 hours, with a picnic on a beach; children 3 and under are booked as infants; not on Fridays |
Four islands and the Emerald Cave, by longtail
Koh Rok and Koh Haa, from age 4
Lanta Old Town. The island's old port on the east coast, with the stilt houses of its merchants over the water. Go by day, for a few hours; it is a lived-in town, so ask before you photograph people.
Khao Mai Kaew cave. Not with young children. It is visited only with a local guide and a torch, through mud, low passages where you crawl, and a rope ladder down a chimney.
The national park at the southern tip. Laem Tanod, with its lighthouse, was reported closed from 11 June 2026, and we have seen no confirmed reopening. Check before you drive down.
Getting around. There is no public transport: tuk-tuks, a car, or a rented scooter. Rent one only if you have ridden before, as accidents are common, and remember that the roads in the south are steep and turn slippery after rain. With children, a car is the safer way to change beach.
Koh Lanta: the island, its corners and its seasons
Lanta has a hospital and private clinics. One island guide says that the hospital and one clinic on Long Beach are the only places open around the clock, that the clinic may close from May to October, and that some emergencies cannot be treated on the island and go on to larger hospitals in Krabi, Trang or Phuket. The same guide puts the hospital at least half an hour's drive from many places on the island.
So ask your hotel, on arrival, where the nearest clinic is and how they would get you there at night. Bring the medicines your children already take, and their doses written down. The emergency number for an ambulance is 1669.
At sea, the Tourism Authority of Thailand names Koh Lanta among the places where box jellyfish are seen, closer to shore in the monsoon. Pack a small bottle of vinegar in the beach bag: on a sting, pour it on for at least 30 seconds, never fresh water, and call 1669.
Jellyfish, red flags and what to do if stung
From about May to October, the southwest monsoon reaches this west-facing coast. The surf picks up, rip currents are common, and when the national park raises a red flag, swimming is dangerous that day, shallow water or not. The boats from Krabi stop, so you come by road, and Koh Rok is closed from June to September.
The island also empties. Many bungalows, bars and dive shops close for the season, above all from Klong Khong south, and some hotels do too. If you come anyway, sleep in the north, at Klong Dao or Long Beach, check that your hotel and a few places to eat nearby will be open, and plan the days around the pool rather than the sea.
Krabi in the rainy season: what closes and what runs
The best time to visit Krabi, month by month
Not a family that wants the classic Krabi island days. Krabi's four-island day by longtail, the gentlest first day at sea for small children, leaves from Ao Nang, three hours away. Spend a few nights on the Ao Nang side first, then come to Lanta to slow down.
Not a family on a short trip: with the road, the ferry and the waits, a stay of fewer than three or four nights spends too much of it travelling. And not for children who need a lot going on in the evening: Lanta's evenings are quiet, and in the low season quieter still.

Yes, from November to April, if you want beach days rather than a tour every morning. Klong Dao has calm water that stays shallow far out, and the island is quiet in the evening.
Klong Dao, the first beach south of Saladan: calm, very shallow water a long way out. Older children who want to swim do better at Long Beach or the north end of Klong Nin.
On the Koh Rok and Koh Haa trip we list, children aged 3 and under are not permitted. The two island days to the south and the mangrove kayaking day from Lanta take them, booked free or in their own category. The child rate runs from 4 to 11 on all four.
Yes, with private clinics as well. One island guide says some emergencies are sent on to larger hospitals in Krabi, Trang or Phuket. Ask your hotel where the nearest clinic is when you arrive.
You can, by road, but it is not the time for a beach holiday with children: rip currents and red flags on the west coast, jellyfish closer to shore, Koh Rok closed from June to September, and many places shut.
