The experience

Best for
The best-regarded snorkelling of the area, in the season, when you are staying on Lanta
Not for you if
You are staying in Ao Nang, you travel from June to September, open-sea crossings make you ill, or a child in your group is 3 or under

Koh Rok and Koh Haa are the islands dive and snorkel operators rate most highly in the area, well out to sea in the Mu Ko Lanta national park. They are Lanta's day at sea: the boats leave from Koh Lanta, which is about three hours from Ao Nang by road and ferry, so this is a trip for people staying on Lanta.

The operator lists snorkelling over the reefs, time on a beach and a lunch buffet, by speedboat, in 7.5 to 8.5 hours. Pickup is available and guiding is in English. Coral bleaching was reported around these islands in 2024, so what you see under water depends on the year as well as the day.

The calendar matters more than the operator. The national parks department closes Koh Rok from 1 June to 30 September and Koh Haa from 1 August to 30 September, and trips run mostly from November to April. In 2026, Koh Haa was also closed on 11 June because of Portuguese man o' war, and we have found no announcement of its reopening: before you book, check with the operator that both islands are on the programme for your date.

Common questions

When is Koh Rok open?

The national parks department's 2026 schedule closes Koh Rok from 1 June to 30 September, and Koh Haa from 1 August to 30 September. Trips run mostly from November to April, and the dates are set each year.

Is Koh Haa open in 2026?

No, not as we write: Koh Haa has been closed since 11 June 2026 because of Portuguese man o' war, and we have found no announcement of its reopening. Check with the operator before you book, and ask what the trip offers instead.

Can I do this from Ao Nang?

Not sensibly as a day trip: the boats leave from Koh Lanta, which is about three hours from Ao Nang by road and ferry. If Koh Rok is the point of your trip, sleep on Lanta.

What are the rules for snorkelling?

Thai rules in force since April 2025 require a life jacket when you snorkel near reefs, unless you hold a freediving certificate, and forbid touching or feeding marine life. Sunscreens with certain reef-harmful ingredients are banned in the marine parks: bring a reef-safe one.
