What we count, and what we refuse to

This site measures its own audience, on its own server, without sending anything to anyone else. This page says exactly what is recorded, what is not, and how to stop it in one click.

On this page 12

We want to know which pages get read and which ones never do, how far people read them, how they found the site, what they click on and whether they come back, so that the guide gets better where it matters. We want to know it without handing anybody's reading habits to an advertising company. So the measurement is written into this site rather than bought, and the data stays on the server that serves the pages.

This page is a factual description of what the code does. It is not a legal statement, and it makes no claim about compliance with any particular law.

Who is behind this site

viakrabi is published by Jean-Marc, who decides what is measured on this site and is the only one who can read the results. Questions about privacy or about the measurement described on this page can be sent to the address below.

What is recorded when you open a page

When a page opens, your browser sends one short message to this site's own server. When you leave the page, or switch to another tab, it sends a second one that completes the first. Each page you read becomes one line in a database, holding the following and nothing else:

  • The address of the page on this site, such as /railay/ or /fr/ou-se-loger/, its title and its language. If you asked for an address that does not exist, that address is recorded too, so that broken links can be found and fixed.
  • How long the page was actually on your screen. The count stops while the tab is in the background.
  • How far down the page you scrolled, as a percentage of its height.
  • Where the visit came from: the domain name of the site that sent you (google.com, reddit.com), never the full address of the page you came from. A page opened from another page of this site is recorded as internal navigation.
  • If the link you followed carried campaign tags (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign), their values. Other parameters in the address are ignored.
  • The type of device (mobile, tablet or computer), the browser family and the operating system, as names such as « Safari » or « Android ». They are worked out from the browser's identification string, which is not itself stored.
  • The size of your screen, the language your browser is set to, and the time zone set on your device.
  • A country. It comes from your IP address, looked up in a copy of the DB-IP country database stored on this site's hosting (no request is made to DB-IP or anyone else); failing that, from your device's time zone. Your IP address is used for this lookup, in memory, and then discarded: it is never written to the database, not even in coded form.
  • The date and time, the page's position in your visit (first page, second page, and so on), and whether this browser has visited the site before.

What is recorded of what you do on a page

Some actions on a page are recorded as well, each as one short line attached to the page where it happened:

  • A click on a link to GetYourGuide or Agoda: which tour or hotel area the link is for, where it sits on the page, and the page itself. The link is not changed in any way, and the click goes exactly where it would have gone anyway.
  • A click on a link to another page of this site (which page), or to another site (its domain name only).
  • A switch between the English and French versions of a page.
  • A click on the site's email or WhatsApp link: the fact that it was clicked, nothing more.
  • A question opened in a FAQ (which question).
  • On the map: the category or area chosen, the place selected, the switch between map and list.
  • Sending the contact form: the fact that it was sent. What you wrote is never read by this measurement.

Your choice, and how a returning visitor is recognised

On your first page, a banner asks whether you agree to be recognised from one visit to the next. Both answers are one click, and neither hides the page. You can change your mind at any time with « Measurement settings » at the bottom of every page. Your answer is kept in your browser's local storage, under the name vkr_consent, so that the banner does not come back on every page.

If you accept, the script draws a random identifier and keeps it in your browser's local storage, under the name vkr_vid. No cookie is set. The identifier is not derived from your device or from anything about you, other websites cannot read it, and it is never extended: thirteen months after it was drawn, it expires and a new one is drawn. A second random identifier, vkr_visite, is kept in the tab's session storage and links the pages of one visit; thirty minutes without activity, and the next page starts a new visit. If you later refuse, both identifiers are deleted from your browser.

The database does not hold these identifiers as such, only a coded version of them. What it does hold is enough for the publisher to see, for one browser, the list of its visits and, for each visit, the pages read in order, with the time spent on each and the actions described above. That is what makes it possible to tell a returning reader from a new one, and to understand how the guide is actually used.

If you refuse, or have not answered yet, or your browser refuses local storage, the pages you read are still recorded as described above, but nothing identifying is stored on your device. The pages of a visit are linked by the server instead: it computes a code from your IP address, your browser's identification string, your language settings and a random value drawn again every day, the old one being deleted. That code changes every day, so in this case a reader is recognised for one day at most, and a visit on another day counts as a new reader.

What is never recorded

  • No IP address, full, shortened or coded.
  • No cookie on your device.
  • No name, no email address, nothing that ties a line of the database to a person.
  • No tracking across other websites.
  • No full referring address, no search terms.
  • No form contents, keystrokes, text selection or mouse movements.
  • No precise location: no city, no address, no GPS.
  • No session recording and no reading of the page's content.

How not to be measured

The button below goes further than refusing in the banner: it stops the measurement in this browser altogether. It deletes the identifiers described above, asks this site's server to erase straight away everything already recorded for this browser's identifier, and remembers your choice in local storage (vkr_optout), so that nothing at all is sent afterwards, not even anonymously. It applies to this browser on this device: on your phone and your other browsers, press it there too.

Other ways to say no

If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, the measuring script does nothing at all: no banner is shown, no identifier is drawn and no message leaves your browser. Blocking JavaScript on this site has the same effect, and every page remains fully readable without it. Clearing this site's data in your browser deletes the identifiers and your answer to the banner.

Browsers that declare themselves as robots and automated browsers are not counted either.

Where the data lives, and how long

In a single database file on the hosting account that serves this site, stored outside the public web folder so that no web address can reach it. It is read through one password-protected page that only the publisher can open.

No analytics provider, advertising network or other third party receives this data. It is not sold, not shared, and not sent anywhere for processing.

Each line is deleted thirteen months after it was recorded, so that a season can be compared with the same season a year earlier. Nothing is kept beyond that. If you accepted, the identifier in your browser expires after thirteen months too.

What our hosting provider does is separate

Like every website, this one is served by a web server, and reaching it requires a network connection. Hosting and network infrastructure may process ordinary technical information, such as connection and server logs, independently of the measurement described on this page, under the provider's own arrangements.

The measurement described here does not read those logs, and nothing in its database is derived from them.

The contact form

If you write to us through the contact page, your name, email address and message are sent to us by email, together with the language of the page. They are not stored on this site, and they are used only to answer you. The measurement only records that the form was sent.

Your requests

You can write to the address below about access, deletion, objection or any other data-protection request that may apply to you.

The quickest way to have your data erased is the « Stop measuring me » button above: it works at once, without writing to anyone. To see what has been recorded for your browser, write to us quoting the measurement identifier shown next to that button: it is the only way we can find your lines, since they are not attached to a name, an email address or an IP address. A browser without storage, or one whose identifier has been deleted, can no longer be found.

If you are not satisfied with how a request is handled, you can lodge a complaint with the data-protection supervisory authority of the country where you live.

What this page does not cover

It describes our own measurement, and nothing else. Parts of this site involve someone else's servers, and we can describe what they are but cannot make promises on their behalf.

Every page loads GetYourGuide's Integration Analyzer from widget.getyourguide.com. It is used to monitor the status and click/conversion performance of GetYourGuide links and widgets and to provide integration reports. GetYourGuide states that the Integration Analyzer does not set third-party cookies, and its own privacy terms apply to its processing. Tour pages also show GetYourGuide's availability widget. Clicking through to book takes you to GetYourGuide, and clicking a hotel link takes you to Agoda; their own terms, cookies and measurement apply there. Booking and payment never happen on this site.

The fonts are served from this site's own hosting: no font is requested from another server.

The map's tiles are served from this site's own hosting, and the mapping library is stored here rather than fetched from elsewhere. What you do on the map is measured only by this site's own script, as described above.
