Red two-seat kayak paddling beneath a limestone cliff in Krabi

Kayaking in Krabi

The Ao Thalane mangroves by kayak, a full day by kayak at Koh Hong, a Hong Islands day with a kayak, and who each one suits.

Kayaking in Krabi mostly means the mangroves of Ao Thalane, north of Ao Nang: channels through the forest and narrow passages between limestone cliffs. The Ao Thalane tours we list are guided, with pickup where your area is served. Two are half days, and on one of them the paddling is the shorter part: about two hours of the four or five. The third is sold as a small group and can be booked as a full day by kayak at Koh Hong.

The tide sets the timing. Operators plan each trip around the tide table, so the start time is theirs to give you. And the right tide is not the same everywhere: at Bor Tor, further north, you pass under Tham Lot only at low tide. For a kayak among islands rather than trees, the Hong Islands day by longtail includes time on the water in one.

Common questions

Can children come kayaking at Ao Thalane?

On the tours we list, yes, within limits. One does not accept children aged 2 and under; on the other two, the youngest join for free (4 and under on one, 3 and under on the other) but must still be added to the booking.

When is the best time to kayak at Ao Thalane?

When the tide suits, and the operator decides that: trips are timed to the tide table rather than to a fixed hour. Sources disagree on which part of the tide is best, so take the time you are given.

Will I see wildlife?

Perhaps. Operators mention crab-eating macaques, otters and sometimes gibbons, but nothing is guaranteed. Keep food out of sight of the monkeys.
