Limestone towers rising from a shallow bay above a band of mangrove forest in Phang Nga Bay

Plan your days

5 days in Krabi

Railay, one long day out to sea, the inland day done properly, the islands close to Ao Nang, and a fifth day kept for the weather.

Best for

A first trip, without rushing

Base

Ao Nang, all five nights

Pace

Relaxed, with two long days

Tours

Two, on days 2 and 4

Scooter

Not needed

The five days in forty seconds

  1. Day 1

    Railay

A longtail from Ao Nang, the beaches on foot, and time to stay. Nothing to book.

  2. Day 2

    The long day at sea

Phi Phi or Phang Nga Bay by speedboat. Early in the trip, so a cancelled boat can move.

  3. Day 3

    Inland, and the town

The Tiger Cave Temple at dawn, a swim at the Emerald Pool, an evening in Krabi Town.

  4. Day 4

    The islands close in

The four islands or the Hong lagoon, on a slower boat.

  5. Day 5

    Kept loose

The spare day for the weather, or a half day in the mangrove, or nothing.

Day 1

Railay, without watching the clock

On three days, Railay has to fit between two boats. On five, it can take the whole day, and the afternoon light on the cliffs is part of it.

Morning

A shared longtail from the Ao Nang beachfront to Railay West. Tickets are sold for cash at the boat counters, and a boat leaves when it has about eight passengers, with no fixed timetable.

There is no pier at Railay West: you step down into shallow water. Wear shorts and keep your phone and passport in a dry bag.

Nothing to book. Check the fare at the counter: there is no official price list online.

Late morning

Walk across to Railay East and along the walkway under the cliffs to Phra Nang Beach, at the southern tip, with the shrine to Phra Nang in its cave at the foot of the cliff. Island tours land here too, so the earlier you arrive, the quieter it is.

Afternoon

Railay is where Krabi climbs, and five days leave room to try. Half-day classes for beginners last about four hours and teach the basic techniques.

If climbing is not for you, swim at Railay West and do nothing else. The viewpoint trail is there for the sure-footed in dry weather only: a climb on mud and ropes, not a walk.

Tonsai, the climbers' beach next door, is over the rocks at low tide only, or by a steep jungle path. Not with luggage, and not in the dark.

Evening

Stay into the late afternoon if you like. The catch is the boat back to Ao Nang: shared longtails run until about 6 pm, and sources disagree on what is left after that, a shared boat at a higher fare or only a whole boat to hire. Ask at the counter before you stay on.

From May to October the sea on the Ao Nang side can suspend these boats. The crossing from Ao Nam Mao to Railay East, on the sheltered side, is described as the more reliable one then.

Day 2

The long day at sea

The day a three-day trip leaves out. It goes early in the trip on purpose: if the sea cancels it, you still have days to move it to.

Phi Phi, the plain version

Our take: One of the shortest Phi Phi days we list, and enough. Maya Bay, the Viking Cave, a snorkel stop and back.

Best for
Maya Bay and Phi Phi Leh, with no evening programme
Time
About 7.5 hours
Skip if
You get seasick: the crossing is in open water

At Maya Bay you land at a pontoon at the back of the island and walk across; swimming is not allowed. The bay closes every year from 1 August to 30 September, and Phi Phi tours keep running then without landing at Maya.

Phi Phi with an early start

Our take: For those who would rather be up early than arrive with everyone else. Nobody can promise fewer boats, but this is the attempt.

Best for
Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon, then four more islands
Time
About 9 hours

You would rather not risk the same islands again on day 4

It adds four more islands, which the listing does not name. If they turn out to be the four off Ao Nang, use day 4 for the Hong Islands rather than the same islands twice.

Phang Nga Bay, with a canoe

Our take: The other long day, and the less beachy one: a bay of limestone towers, seen from a speedboat and from a canoe.

Best for
James Bond Island, sea caves and karst from the water
Time
About 7.5 hours

You want a beach and a swim to be the point of the day

Phang Nga Bay has its own Koh Hong, which is not the Koh Hong of the Hong Islands day. Check which one a tour means before you book both.

Day 3

Inland in the morning, Krabi Town at night

After a long day on a speedboat, a day that does not depend on the sea. With five days, the inland day can take in the Emerald Pool as well as the temple, which a three-day trip has to leave out.

Early morning

The Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea), northeast of Krabi Town, from when it opens, around 5 or 6 am by visitors' accounts. The staircase to the summit shrine has about 1,260 steps; sources disagree on the exact number. Most people take between half an hour and an hour.

Shoulders and knees covered, shoes you can climb in, water in your bag and nothing edible in your hands: the macaques on the lower steps take food and open bottles.

Two people died on the climb in March 2026. Go at your own pace, turn back if you feel unwell, and if you have heart trouble, stay at the foot. Entry is free.

Late morning

Further east, in Khlong Thom district, the Emerald Pool: a spring-fed pool in the forest of a wildlife sanctuary, a walk of about 800 m on the direct path or 1.4 km on the boardwalk. You may swim in the main pool only. The edges are slippery and there is no ladder.

The Blue Pool, a few hundred metres further on, is for looking at: swimming there is not allowed. Ask at the gate whether it is open before you walk on.

The sanctuary has its own ticket at its own gate; one source says it is cash only, so carry some. It is not covered by any national park ticket.

Afternoon

Back towards Krabi Town, and indoors for the hottest hours. If there is energy left, a longtail from Chao Fah pier to Khao Khanap Nam, the two limestone pinnacles in the river. The boat is priced per boat: agree the price, and whether the boatman waits, before you go.

Evening

If this lands on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, the Walking Street in Soi Maharat 8, from about 5 pm: the biggest market of the week. One guide lists only Friday and Saturday, so ask at your hotel before counting on a Sunday.

On other evenings, the Chao Fah night market by the river is reported every evening, though by a single source. Or swap this day with day 5 so that the evening falls at the weekend.

Nothing to book if you go on your own: all of today is by road, with a driver or a taxi. Agree the return to Ao Nang in advance, as the white songthaews finish early.

Day 4

The islands close to Ao Nang

Short crossings and a slower boat, after a long one. Choose by what day 2 was: if it already included the four islands, go to the Hong Islands.

The four islands, by longtail

Our take: The classic Krabi island day, on the classic Krabi boat. The hours go to the islands, not to the crossing.

Best for
Beaches, snorkelling, and the sandbar at Koh Tup
Time
About 6 hours
Skip if
Your day 2 tour already went round these islands

The sandbar between Koh Tup, Chicken Island and Koh Mor appears only at low tide. Look at a tide table for your date before you book.

Our take: A different park and a different day: a lagoon closed in by cliffs, entered by boat or kayak.

Best for
The Koh Hong lagoon, and paddling
Time
About 7 hours

You climbed the Tiger Cave staircase yesterday and the viewpoint is why you are going

If the day takes you up to Koh Hong's viewpoint, it is a staircase of about 400 steps with no shade. The lagoon alone needs no effort, and it is shallow at low tide.

Day 5

The day the sea can take back

Leave it unbooked until the night before. If a boat was cancelled earlier in the week, this is where it goes; if not, it is yours.

Morning

If a boat day was cancelled, rebook it for today. That is the whole reason this day exists, and in the monsoon, from May to October, it is the day most likely to be used.

If nothing was cancelled, walk along Nopparat Thara, the long beach just west of Ao Nang. At low tide the sea pulls back a long way and a sandbar runs out towards the islet offshore: a walk rather than a swim.

Nothing to book. Look at a tide table before you go: at high tide the sandbar is under water.

Afternoon

A half day in a kayak among the mangroves and limestone cliffs of Ao Thalane, with pickup where your area is served. The day is about the trees and the rock rather than the beach.

Or nothing at all. After four full days, an afternoon by the pool is not a wasted one.

Evening

If you have not seen it yet, a night swim in bioluminescent plankton: the water lights up in small sparks when you move. How strong the glow is cannot be booked, and one local travel site's rule of thumb is that darker nights, around the new moon, are better.

Otherwise, the Landmark night market on the Ao Nang seafront, which is on every day, and an early night.
