Why go

For a walk in the shade along a clear stream and its pools, close to Ao Luek town, on a day in the north of the province with the Ao Luek caves. Do not come expecting the Emerald Pool: one guide finds these pools pleasant but ordinary next to Krabi's other freshwater pools.

What you will find

Next to the park office, a natural stream of clear green water runs through shaded forest and falls into pools on several levels. A boardwalk leads through a garden to the pools, with limestone walls around it.

This is only the land part of the park. Than Bok Khorani also takes in the Ao Luek caves, reached by boat from Bor Tor, and islands offshore, among them the Koh Hong of the Hong Islands day from Ao Nang.

Getting there

By road north from Krabi Town to Ao Luek; the park office and the pools are just outside the town.

The caves are not reached from here on foot: Tham Lot, and Tham Phi Hua To, closed by the park in November 2023 and not reopened as far as we know, are reached by longtail or kayak from the Bor Tor pier.

Before you go

A national park fee is charged here for foreign visitors. Sources agree that it covers the land section; whether it also covers the boat trip to the caves is disputed, so check what you are paying for.

Swimming is allowed in places: keep out of the water where signs forbid it. In the rainy season, run-off can cloud the water.

Paths and rocks get slippery after rain.

Is Than Bok Khorani the same as the Hong Islands?

The Hong Islands belong to Than Bok Khorani National Park, but they are offshore and visited by boat from Ao Nang. This page is about the land entrance near Ao Luek, with its stream and pools.
