The experience

Best for
Staying on Phi Phi and wanting Maya Bay early in the day
Not for you if
You are staying on the mainland, you travel between 1 August and 30 September, or you want to swim at Maya Bay

Day trips from Krabi begin with a crossing of open water. This tour starts on Phi Phi itself, and its whole promise is in its title: to be in the first group at Maya Bay, ahead of the crowds. The listing does not say what time that means; the operator will give you the meeting time.

After Maya Bay, the operator lists a swim in Pileh Lagoon, snorkelling among fish and coral, and lunch on Bamboo Island, north of Phi Phi Don. The listing runs from 4.5 to 8.5 hours, a range it does not explain: check at booking which version you are on.

Maya Bay closes every year from 1 August to 30 September, and in those months a tour built around arriving there first loses its point. Swimming at Maya Bay is not allowed at any time. Phi Phi charges its own national park fee, which also applies on Bamboo Island; check on the booking page whether it is included.

The route

  1. Stop 1 of 4

A lagoon on Koh Phi Phi Leh, where the operator lists a swim.

  3. Stop 3 of 4

    Snorkelling

  4. Stop 4 of 4

    Lunch on Bamboo Island

Common questions

Can I do this from Krabi?

Not as a day trip: the tour starts on Phi Phi, and the listing mentions no pickup on the mainland. From Krabi, the early-bird Phi Phi tour we list is the one built around an early start.

Can I swim at Maya Bay?

No. Swimming is banned at Maya Bay. Boats no longer enter the bay: you land at a pier at Loh Samah, on the other side of the island, and walk to the beach on a boardwalk. The bay also closes every year from 1 August to 30 September; tours keep running in those months, without landing there.

Is Bamboo Island part of Phi Phi?

It is a separate island, north of Phi Phi Don, in the same national park, and the park's fee applies there too.

What are the rules for snorkelling?

Thai rules in force since April 2025 require a life jacket when you snorkel near reefs, unless you hold a freediving certificate, and forbid touching or feeding marine life. Sunscreens with certain reef-harmful ingredients are banned in the marine parks: bring a reef-safe one.
